Daptar Prototype Demos

Daptar Prototype Demos

After multiple iterations, most of the tablet is now functional. The tablet can turn on and off, charge, play and record audio, connect to a monitor via HDMI, and read USB devices such as pen drives.

The tablet runs a prototype operating system that supports reading and note-taking in its current unassembled state. It is based on Linux and can run standard Linux applications.

Three demonstrations illustrate the current capabilities of the tablet. The first demo shows the device reading an ePub version of a book using a Linux application. The second demo demonstrates handwriting input using a handwriting tablet. At present, this tablet is connected to a laptop, but with the addition of a driver, handwriting input will soon work directly on the e-ink screen. The third demo presents the operating system that will run on the final prototype. This demo is recorded with the OS running inside a virtual machine. The same OS is used in the first demo for reading the book.

The core technology components of Daptar are now functional. While there is still room for improvement, achieving this milestone required coordinated work across multiple layers of the system, including custom hardware design, firmware development, and Linux driver integration.

Demo 1 - ePub reading & navigation

Demonstration highlights reading and navigation. Here, I browse a textbook using a Linux application, showing smooth interaction with long-form educational content on the Daptar prototype.

Demo 2 - Writing

Below demonstration focuses on handwriting input. In this demo, I write a birthday message to a close friend. A sensing pad placed beneath the display captures the handwriting and renders it directly on the screen, enabling a natural pen-on-paper experience.

Demo 3 - Operating System

Demonstration shows the device security screen, book store, and the ability to download and read books, take notes, and change settings. The first demo is running this operating system for book reading.
